The patient had come in with a swollen leg, wrapped tightly in layers of cloth. He wouldnât say how it happenedâjust that it âstarted hurting after the hike.â
As the doctor unwrapped the bandages, the room was overtaken by a sour, metallic stench. Nurses stepped back. The patient turned pale.
Beneath the final layer, the skin was blackened and split, but that wasnât the worst part. Crawling from inside the wound were tiny, moving shapesâmaggots.
The doctor looked up slowly.
