The seismic event occurred in the Pacific Ocean approximately 180 miles west of the coastline at 10:25 p.m. Eastern Time. Because the epicenter was located offshore, the earthquake did not cause immediate damage on land, though it was detected by monitoring systems across the region. A smaller aftershock measuring magnitude 3.1 was recorded several hours later in the early hours of Friday morning, indicating ongoing seismic activity in the area.
