The patient had come in with a swollen leg, wrapped tightly in layers of cloth. He wouldn’t say how it happened—just that it “started hurting after the hike.”

As the doctor unwrapped the bandages, the room was overtaken by a sour, metallic stench. Nurses stepped back. The patient turned pale.

Beneath the final layer, the skin was blackened and split, but that wasn’t the worst part. Crawling from inside the wound were tiny, moving shapes—maggots.

The doctor looked up slowly.
“This isn’t just an infection,” she said. “Something’s living in there…”
