The Classified Plot: Did a Congressman Try to Take Down a President?

Whistleblower Accusations and Declassified FBI Reports Threaten to Derail Sen. Adam Schiff’s Career

A Democrat whistleblower has come forward with explosive claims, now supported by newly declassified FBI interview records, that could severely impact the political future of Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA). The allegations, if proven true and pursued legally, could lead to not only the end of Schiff’s political career but also severe financial penalties and the possibility of lengthy prison time.

At the center of the controversy is Schiff’s role during his tenure on the House Intelligence Committee, where he served first as ranking member and then as chairman during the height of the Trump–Russia probe. According to the whistleblower, who reportedly worked on the Democratic side of the committee for over a decade, Schiff authorized the leak of classified intelligence to select members of the press with the intent to damage then-President Donald Trump.

Despite the seriousness of these allegations, the whistleblower alleges that no meaningful investigation took place. He claims to have shared his account with senior FBI officials, including Director Christopher Wray, yet no actions were taken. A second attempt to revive the complaint through the FBI’s St. Louis office in 2023 reportedly also resulted in no follow-up.

Legal experts are now weighing in on the possible implications should prosecutors decide to move forward. Former U.S. Attorney Brett Tolman told political commentator Benny Johnson that if any charges are filed, the legal consequences could be significant.

“The fine is up to $250,000 for every count of classified information improperly disclosed,” Tolman explained. “Depending on how many leaks are charged, Schiff could be facing millions in fines.”

But it doesn’t end there. Tolman added that the nature of the alleged leaks—particularly their potential use in a coordinated effort to undermine a sitting president—could bring even more serious charges.

“If prosecutors determine the leak was part of a broader conspiracy to interfere with presidential duties or manipulate public perception, then conspiracy laws, obstruction statutes, and possibly even national security statutes could come into play,” he said.

While he stopped short of labeling it treason, Tolman noted that if prosecutors find evidence the leak was intended to “undermine the United States,” prison sentences of up to 20 years could be on the table.

“This could rise to the level of a full-blown federal conspiracy case,” Tolman said. “It’s not just about a leak—it’s about intent and impact.”

The lack of action from the FBI in response to these reports has reignited criticisms of Director Wray’s leadership. Detractors say the bureau has been reluctant to investigate politically powerful individuals. Kash Patel, a former senior official under Trump, has pointed to this case as another example of selective enforcement.

Patel also previously criticized the FBI’s handling of intelligence prior to the January 6 Capitol protest, alleging that the agency had foreknowledge of potential unrest but failed to act, while aggressively prosecuting participants afterward.

Schiff has not yet made a formal statement addressing the whistleblower’s allegations or the declassified FBI interview records. In the past, he has consistently denied leaking classified material and has labeled such accusations as politically motivated attempts to discredit his oversight work.

However, with public attention now refocused on his actions during the Trump-Russia investigation—and a whistleblower’s claims now backed by government records—Schiff may soon be facing serious questions from both Congress and the public.

Whether the Department of Justice will act on these allegations remains uncertain, but legal experts agree the situation is serious enough to warrant further investigation. If even part of the whistleblower’s testimony holds up in court, the political fallout could be unprecedented.
