Why should garlic be placed at the head of the bed when sleeping at night?

Although it may seem unusual, placing a clove of garlic under your pillow before sleep is believed to offer several health benefits:
1. Relieving Nasal Congestion
Garlic is well known for its immune-boosting properties. For those who frequently suffer from nasal congestion due to illness or weather changes, placing a clove of garlic under the pillow can be beneficial. Garlic contains a potent antibiotic compound called allicin, which is released from the clove and helps fight infections. Additionally, allicin can help clear the respiratory passages by dissolving mucus in the nose – albeit gradually – so that over time, you experience reduced congestion and breathe more easily.
2. Boosting the Immune System
Thanks to its strong antibacterial properties, garlic is capable of killing harmful bacteria. The allicin in garlic also helps to inhibit the spread of bacterial pathogens throughout the body. By regularly placing garlic under your pillow, you might find yourself waking up feeling more alert in the morning and less susceptible to illness.
3. Repelling Mosquitoes and Other Insects
Scientific studies suggest that the strong, pungent aroma of garlic can effectively repel various harmful insects, especially flies and mosquitoes. The odor disorients these insects, preventing them from invading your space. In addition to placing garlic under your pillow, you can also rub a little garlic-infused water on exposed areas of skin at night to help ward off mosquito bites.
4. Promoting Better Sleep
Even a single clove of garlic under your pillow may help improve the quality of your sleep by promoting deeper rest. Garlic is rich in vitamins B1 and B6, which combat insomnia and stimulate the production of hormones that facilitate sound sleep. As a result, you may wake up feeling more refreshed and healthier. It is important, however, to avoid using an overly thick pillow, as this can reduce the efficacy of the garlic’s beneficial effects.
While scientific evidence supporting these benefits varies, many people continue to use this traditional practice in hopes of enjoying its potential advantages.
