His father left when he was just a baby, and his mother, unable to cope, became a prostitute. He and his sister were raised by their grandmother. Despite the odds, he showed a natural gift for music, singing in the streets for spare change.
-A compassionate Jewish family from Lithuania, the Karnoffskys, took him in and treated him with warmth and respect. They fed him, gave him odd jobs, and supported his musical passion—buying him his first instrument. He learned Jewish melodies and customs, and in gratitude, wore a Star of David for the rest of his life.
