NEWS & CURRENT EVENTS Fireball Crash Catastrophe: Bangladesh Fighter Jet Hits School During Exams

A Bangladesh Air Force training plane crashed into a school campus in the capital city of Dhaka on Monday, killing at least 16 persons, the majority of whom were kids.

According to the office of interim leader Muhammad Yunus, the accident also injured over 100 persons, with at least 83 of them receiving medical attention in other hospitals.

In the afternoon, children were on the Milestone School and College campus in the Uttara section of the city when the plane crashed upon it.

Television images showed smoke and fire rising from the crash site as onlookers attempted to extinguish the flames.

In a brief statement, the public relations office of the Bangladesh Army confirmed that the fallen F-7 BGI aircraft was Air Force property.

Yunus went on to say that “necessary measures” would be made to “ensure all kinds of assistance” and look into the accident’s cause.

“The loss suffered by the Air Force…students, parents, teachers and staff, and others in this accident is irreparable,” he said.

According to the local newspaper Prothom Alo, preliminary reports suggested that the jet had collided with the college canteen’s roof.

The incident occurs just over a month after the world’s worst aviation tragedy in a decade occurred when an Air India airline fell on top of a medical college hostel in Ahmedabad, India, a neighboring city. The crash killed 241 of the 242 persons on board and 19 on the ground.

Fuel switches for the engines of the lost Boeing 787 Dreamliner started to lose thrust and sank shortly after taking off for London from the Indian city on June 12, according to an early study into the tragedy.

The audio recorder in the cockpit captured one pilot asking the other why he had cut off the fuel in the last moments of the flight.

According to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) report from India, “the other pilot responded that he did not do so.”

It did not identify which remarks were made by the flight’s captain and which by the first officer, nor which pilot immediately transmitted the distress call: “Thrust not achieved… falling… Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!”

All but one passenger on board and 19 persons on the ground were killed when the airplane crashed into a dormitory in Gujarat, lost altitude, and burst into a blaze seconds later.

Early evaluations by investigators show that neither the Boeing nor its engines appear to have been at fault, indicating that neither Boeing nor engine manufacturer GE appeared to be accountable for the accident.

However, how the switch, which is used to start or stop the engines and is usually left on during flight, might have flipped to the cutoff position is not explained in the paper.

“Did they move on their own or did they move because of the pilots?” he asked. “And if they were moved because of a pilot, why?”

‘Allowable limits’ were met by the jet’s 54,200 kg of fuel, according to the study.

“The aircraft achieved the maximum recorded airspeed of 180 Knots IAS at about 08:08:42 UTC and immediately thereafter, the Engine 1 and Engine 2 fuel cutoff switches transitioned from RUN to CUTOFF position one after another with a time gap of 01 sec,” the report said.

“The Engine N1 and N2 began to decrease from their take-off values as the fuel supply to the engines was cut off.”

Referring to data recovered from the plane’s two Enhanced Airborne Flight Recorders (EAFR), it continues: “As per the EAFR, the Engine 1 fuel cutoff switch transitioned from CUTOFF to RUN at about 08:08:52 UTC. The APU Inlet Door began opening at about 08:08:54 UTC, consistent with the APU Auto Start logic.”
