The cause of death is currently unknown, and numerous colleagues and friends are saying goodbye to the actress. Jay Laga’aja, her co-star from the series “Soldier Soldier”, was among the first to speak out, sending a touching message:
“You are so young… I will miss you. We worked together many times and every meeting with you brought me joy. Good luck, sister, you will always have a special place in my heart.”
Maris grew up in Ponsomby, one of five children. At the age of 18, she moved to Christchurch, where the producer of the Miss New Zealand pageant noticed her and encouraged her to apply. She came in second place – just behind her friend Lorraine Downs, who later became Miss Universe, reports The Daily Mail.
Maris admitted years later that she was happy she didn’t win. In her witty and candid style, she told the New Zealand Herald:
“Oh no, that would be my worst nightmare. I dodged a bullet… I wasn’t thinking about winning at all. I just wanted to travel and make money.”
She was also known as the Lotto Girl.
Her modesty, cheerful spirit, and natural warmth marked not only her career, but also all those who knew her.
