It happened on a freezing afternoon — a dog chasing geese across an icy lake suddenly fell through the thin ice, trapped in the freezing water.
Bystanders could only watch helplessly as the animal fought to stay afloat, its cries growing weaker by the second. Then, without hesitation, Jason Skidgel stepped forward.
He stripped off his jacket and walked straight into the lake. The crowd gasped as the ice cracked beneath him, but he kept going — breaking through with his bare hands until he reached the struggling dog. “Come on, buddy,” he called softly, before pulling the animal into his arms.
