The Visitor in the Kitchen

It was 3 a.m., and the Soto household was quiet—except for the faint tapping coming from the kitchen. Little Mateo, only five years old, tiptoed out of his room with his stuffed dinosaur in hand. He was thirsty, but what he found made him freeze in his tracks.

There, perched on the counter beside the utensils, was a long, brown insect. Its antennae twitched as if sensing him. Mateo let out a squeak and ran back to his parents’ room.

“Papá! Mamá! There’s a monster in the kitchen!”

His father, half asleep, chuckled, thinking it was another bad dream. But when he followed Mateo back, sure enough, the creature was still there—legs twitching, ready to scurry. And that wasn’t the worst of it. Later that morning, while scooping rice from the pantry, they found another one, crawling between the grains.

The Sotos now faced a mystery: Where were these strange invaders coming from? Were they harmless, or was their kitchen under siege?

That night, Mateo asked nervously, “Papá… what if they’re not bugs at all? What if they’re spies… watching us?”

His parents laughed, but as the silence of the night returned, a faint scratching echoed from the pantry door.

Something was definitely alive in there.
