When Maya checked into the hotel, everything felt… off. The lobby smelled faintly of bleach, the concierge barely made eye contact, and the elevator made a grinding noise she couldn’t ignore.

But it had been a long flight, and all she wanted was a hot shower and clean clothes. She wheeled her navy suitcase into the room and, just as she reached for the zipper, her grandmother’s voice echoed in her mind:

“Always check the bed first. And whatever you do—don’t unpack until you’re sure.”

It sounded paranoid. But Grandma had worked in pest control for 40 years. Maya paused. That’s when she remembered a travel hack she’d seen online: Put your suitcase in the bathroom—specifically, in the bathtub—until you’ve checked for bedbugs.

It seemed silly… but she did it anyway.

Ten minutes later, after lifting the sheets and checking the mattress seams with her phone flashlight, her stomach turned. Tiny rust-colored spots. Movement. Her worst fear confirmed: bedbugs.

Had she opened her suitcase on the bed, they’d be crawling through her clothes by now.

She grabbed her phone, took photos, and marched to the front desk. When the manager saw the proof, they upgraded her to a suite, fumigated her bag, and comped her entire stay.

As she soaked in a luxurious clawfoot tub in the new room, she whispered, “Thanks, Grandma.”
