When news broke that Robert Downey Jr. had been cast as Doctor Doom in the MCU, many fans voiced their disappointment and frustration. Known for his beloved portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man, Downey Jr. is synonymous with heroism and wit in the Marvel franchise, making the leap to a villainous role feel jarring to some. Critics of the decision argued that his casting could overshadow Doom’s character, turning the fearsome, calculating villain into a reflection of Stark’s charm and ego rather than honoring Doom’s distinct identity. Others worried it might undermine the gravitas and menace that define Victor Von Doom, especially with Downey Jr.’s strong association with one of Marvel’s greatest heroes. The backlash highlighted fans’ desire for fresh faces or lesser-known actors to bring Doom’s unique complexity to life without the baggage of such an iconic performance history.
