Pope Leo XIV took aim at JD Vance just weeks before becoming first American Pope

Tensions Rise as First American Pope Challenges U.S. Leaders

Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost of Chicago, has made history as the first American pontiff, following the death of Pope Francis. While U.S. leaders like President Trump and Vice President JD Vance welcomed his election with praise, signs of tension are already emerging.

Despite public congratulations from Vance, Leo XIV appears critical of some of his views. In February, a verified X account linked to the Pope shared an op-ed pushing back on Vance’s interpretation of Christian values, especially regarding his ranking of love and loyalty — placing Americans above others.

The Pope also recently reposted criticism of Trump and El Salvador’s President Bukele over their deportation jokes, signaling a willingness to challenge political figures whose actions clash with Church teachings.

While Leo XIV’s election is celebrated, his positions suggest he may not align with MAGA conservatives — and he’s not afraid to show it.
