MY BOSS FIRED ME FOR “STEALING” A SANDWICH—BUT THE REAL REASON WAS WORSE

I worked at this small café for almost two years. The pay wasn’t great, but I liked my coworkers, and I needed the money. My manager, Greg, was the type of guy who smiled in your face but would throw you under the bus the second something went wrong.
One afternoon, I was in the break room eating a turkey sandwich when Greg stormed in. His face was red, and he was holding a crumpled receipt.

“Did you pay for that?” he asked, pointing at my sandwich.
I blinked, confused. “Uh, yeah? I bought it this morning.”
He shook his head. “I checked the register logs. No turkey sandwiches were sold today.”
I laughed a little, thinking he was joking. “Greg, I got it from the grocery store. It’s literally in a plastic bag from home.”

But he wasn’t laughing. He said he had “proof” that I’d taken a sandwich from the café fridge without paying. That was ridiculous—I brought my own lunch every day because I couldn’t afford the overpriced food here.

Then he hit me with it: “You’re fired. Theft is theft.”
I was too stunned to argue at first. But something didn’t add up. Why would he suddenly accuse me of something so petty? I started thinking back, and then it hit me—
