True Stories That Grow More

Story 1

I was out on an abroad business trip. On the third day, I received a text from my wife requesting me to return immediately since our son had an accident. “I didn’t send you a text!” my wife said when I arrived. I showed her my phone. Her color altered.

She replied, “I didn’t text you! I decided our son is fine.”

But the SMS was there, sent from her phone number. She turned to face me, her voice wavering. “I didn’t send that. I was planning to surprise you on your trip because I found out I was pregnant the day you left. But then I changed my mind—I started feeling nauseous.”

A flood of happiness washed over me at the prospect of being a father again, but it was soon replaced by an uncomfortable feeling. Neither of us could articulate the message. Then we both became pale. There was another message that warned, “Be careful. Your boy isn’t well.”

We tried to figure out who might have sent the SMS but soon gave up, figuring my phone had been compromised. These were the only two unusual messages we had received, so we decided to move on.

Months later, my wife experienced an unexpected miscarriage… We lost a baby boy. It’s been ten years, and I still get chills thinking about it.
