The Graves Beneath Savannah Airport – Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport has an unusual feature—two graves embedded in runway 10. They belong to Catherine and Richard Dotson, pioneers who farmed the land before it became an airport. In 1942, the U.S. War Department expanded the land for WWII training. While most graves were relocated, the Dotson descendants insisted Catherine and Richard remain. Their headstones now lie within the airport’s active runway—the only known graves embedded in a functioning tarmac. Two other graves, belonging to John Dotson and Daniel Hueston, remain nearby in airport shrubbery. Pilots and crew are familiar with the site—and its ghost stories. Savannah, one of America’s most haunted cities, is steeped in history, from wartime battles to yellow fever victims. For some visitors, the eerie welcome begins as soon as their plane lands
