“I don’t want to see her in a nursing home”: the young boy has been taking care of his 96-year-old grandmother who raised him for 7 years…
Loving and caring grandparents are truly important for a child’s growth and development. Those who have had the fortune of spending a part of their life with them will unlikely forget the teachings and advice received.
In many cases, grandparents are a real pillar for the family, especially when people have grown up with them due to their parents’ work commitments, making their bond even stronger.
Chris Punsalan is a twenty-year-old of Filipino origin who has always lived with his family and his 96-year-old grandmother, affectionately called Lola. For about seven years, she has needed constant care and attention due to her age. Chris, being the only family member without work commitments outside the home, took it upon himself to become her full-time caregiver.
Even before his grandmother’s condition worsened, Chris used to post funny videos on his social media accounts, showing himself together with her. In 2019, he decided to share a video on YouTube showing “a day in his life as a caregiver” to raise awareness about the difficulties of constantly caring for a non-self-sufficient person.
It’s needless to say that the video quickly went viral, and everyone who saw it praised Chris for doing his best to brighten his elderly grandmother’s life. He continued to share his daily life with Lola, and people couldn’t help but be inspired by their bond
Since Lola is confined to a wheelchair, Chris takes care of putting her to bed and getting her up in the morning, administering necessary medications, feeding her, and ensuring her personal hygiene. In addition to this, Chris is a music and digital content creator, and during Lola’s rest times, he can fully devote himself to his profession.
Lola still has a bright and lively mind, and she loves reading the comments from people who follow her beloved grandson’s accounts. Chris mentioned in one of his videos that he believes this activity has contributed to keeping her mentally active.
